Stampede at Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj Results in Multiple Casualties
A tragic incident unfolded at the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, where a stampede occurred early today, claiming the lives of at least 30 pilgrims and injuring 60 others. The incident took place as thousands of devotees had gathered at the Triveni Sangam for a holy dip on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, one of the most significant rituals of the event.
The chaos was triggered by the collapse of barricades, leading to a stampede-like situation between 1:00 AM and 2:00 AM. The massive crowd, overwhelmed by the surge of people, caused several individuals to fall, resulting in severe injuries and loss of life. While 25 of the deceased have been identified, five remain unaccounted for.
In a statement to the media, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) overseeing Maha Kumbh operations confirmed the number of casualties and injuries. He also announced the launch of a dedicated helpline number, ‘1920’, to assist people in locating missing relatives and gathering information. In the aftermath of the tragedy, the DIG confirmed that no VIP visitors would be permitted at the Kumbh Mela today to ensure the safety of those in attendance.
Authorities have urged devotees to exercise caution and follow safety protocols as the Mela continues. Despite the tragedy, the Kumbh Mela, which draws millions of pilgrims from across the country, is proceeding with heightened security measures to prevent further incidents.
