New Delhi witnessed a historic moment as Chief Justice N Kotiswar Singh of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court became the first judge elevated to the Supreme Court from Manipur. Simultaneously, Acting Chief Justice of Madras High Court, R Mahadevan, also took oath as a judge of the apex court.
Administered by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, the oath ceremony at the Supreme Court premises marked the appointment of both justices, bringing the court’s strength to its full capacity of 34 judges, including the Chief Justice of India.
The Supreme Court will maintain this full complement until the retirement of Justice Hima Kohli on September 1, 2024, followed by CJI Chandrachud on November 10 the same year.
The Centre approved the recommendations of the Supreme Court collegium on July 16, following the collegium’s decision on July 11, where CJI Chandrachud led the panel in recommending Singh and Mahadevan for elevation to the apex court.
