NPCI Introduces New FASTag Guidelines Starting August 1, 2024, with Updated KYC Requirements

Starting August 1, 2024, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) will enforce new guidelines for FASTag users, including updated Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements. The updated regulations aim to enhance the efficiency of the electronic toll collection system and ensure smoother transit at toll booths.

Key Updates Include:

  • KYC Updates: Users must update their KYC details by October 31, 2024, especially for FASTags issued between 3 to 5 years ago.
  • Replacement of Old FASTags: FASTags older than five years must be replaced.
  • Linking Vehicle Details: All FASTags must be linked to the vehicle’s registration number and chassis number.
  • New Vehicle Registration Update: New vehicle owners must update their FASTag with the vehicle’s registration number within 90 days of purchase.
  • Database Verification: FASTag providers are required to verify and maintain accurate databases.
  • Photo Upload Requirement: Providers must upload clear images of the vehicle’s front and side for better identification.
  • Mobile Number Linking: Each FASTag must be linked to a mobile number for effective communication and updates.
  • Final Deadline: The complete KYC process must be finished by October 31, 2024, to avoid service interruptions.

FASTag, an electronic toll collection system utilizing Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, facilitates seamless toll payments and is designed to reduce congestion at toll plazas. Affixed to a vehicle’s windscreen, FASTag allows for automated toll deductions without requiring a stop.

Launched in 2014, FASTag has expanded significantly, covering over 500 highways across India. As of September 2019, over 5.4 million vehicles were equipped with FASTag. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) mandated its use for all vehicles at national highway toll plazas starting February 15, 2021.
