BRS Protests Against CM Revanth Reddy’s Remarks on Women Legislators

Hyderabad – On August 1, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) staged a strong protest in the Assembly against remarks made by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy about the party’s women MLAs, P Sabitha Indra Reddy and Sunita Laxman Reddy. The protest saw BRS party workers burning effigies and demonstrating across the streets, demanding an apology from the Chief Minister.

A video that has gone viral shows BRS working president KT Rama Rao (KTR) being forcibly taken into preventive custody following his protest against the Congress government. Several other BRS MLAs were also detained. KTR criticized Revanth Reddy for his disrespectful comments towards the two BRS legislators and demanded an immediate apology.

The protest has extended to all district and mandal headquarters, with BRS MLAs in Hyderabad wearing black badges and the two women legislators donning black sarees to signify their disapproval. Former minister and senior BRS leader P Harish Rao was also taken into preventive custody, condemning the state’s political climate and likening it to a police state. He argued that democracy in the state was being undermined by the restrictions placed on legislators.

Revanth Reddy’s comments, made during a response to KTR’s query about the absence of a minority minister in the Congress cabinet, ignited the controversy. Revanth suggested that KTR’s reliance on his “elder sisters” would lead him to end up at the Jubilee Bus Station, referring to Sabitha Indra Reddy and Sunita Laxman Reddy, who were seated behind KTR.

In a passionate response, Sabitha Indra Reddy accused Revanth Reddy of targeting her during every Assembly session. She recalled having invited Revanth to join Congress and predicted his rise to the position of Chief Minister, questioning why he continued to attack her.

The ongoing situation highlights significant tensions between the BRS and the Congress government, reflecting broader political and personal conflicts within the state.
