Rahul Gandhi Urges PM Modi to Visit Manipur Amid Ongoing Violence

New Delhi: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has once again called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Manipur and address the escalating ethnic violence in the northeastern state. Speaking on Thursday, Gandhi highlighted the dire situation faced by the people of Manipur, who have been grappling with intense ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities since May last year.

In a poignant social media post, Gandhi shared his recent interactions with Manipuri individuals living in Delhi, who revealed the profound personal and communal toll of the conflict. “They spoke of being separated from their loved ones and the severe impact this violence has had on their lives,” Gandhi said, emphasizing their request for anonymity due to fears of retribution.

Gandhi’s appeal came as he marked Independence Day with a message of solidarity for the people of Manipur. He urged Prime Minister Modi to make a visit to the conflict-ridden state to facilitate dialogue between central and state authorities aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution. “As we celebrate our freedom, let us not forget those for whom true freedom remains out of reach,” he remarked.

Congress leaders praised Gandhi’s efforts as a commitment to addressing national concerns and sending a strong message that the plight of Manipur cannot be overlooked. The meeting with Manipuri individuals, which followed Gandhi’s attendance at the Red Fort Independence Day celebrations, underscored his dedication to highlighting and addressing the crisis.

Gandhi’s recent visit to Manipur marked his third trip since the violence began. During his previous visit, he had also urged Prime Minister Modi to visit the state, asserting that such a visit would provide comfort to the affected populace and demonstrate the government’s commitment to resolving the conflict.

The ongoing violence has resulted in over 200 deaths and has deeply affected the social fabric of Manipur. Gandhi’s call for a high-level visit and intervention reflects growing concerns about the need for immediate and effective measures to restore peace and stability in the region.

Today, I met with a group of Manipuri people living in Delhi who shared their heartbreaking struggles since the onset of the conflict in their region.
