India Sends 1,400 kg of Anti-Cancer Drugs to Syria in Humanitarian Aid

New Delhi: India has dispatched a significant humanitarian aid consignment of approximately 1,400 kilograms of anti-cancer drugs to Syria, as announced by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). This gesture underscores India’s commitment to supporting Syria amidst ongoing humanitarian challenges.

The official spokesperson for the MEA, Randhir Jaiswal, confirmed the dispatch on Friday via X, detailing that the shipment aims to assist the Syrian government and its citizens in their battle against cancer. “India sends humanitarian assistance to Syria. In keeping with its humanitarian commitments, India has despatched anti-cancer drugs to Syria,” Jaiswal stated, accompanied by images of the consignment.

The historical bond between Syria and India is marked by strong people-to-people connections and mutual support. The Indian Embassy in Syria has maintained its operations throughout the Syrian conflict, continuing to facilitate travel and cooperation between the two nations. Additionally, India has significantly contributed to the development of Syrian youth through scholarships and training programs under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) scheme.

In recent months, Syria’s First Lady Asma Assad was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, as reported by the state news agency SANA. This follows her earlier battle with breast cancer, from which she had recovered in 2019. The current aid from India is expected to provide critical support in Syria’s ongoing efforts to address cancer treatment needs amidst the country’s challenging circumstances.
