Supreme Court to Hear BRS Leader K Kavitha’s Bail Pleas in Delhi Excise Policy Case

New Delhi: The Supreme Court is set to hear on Tuesday the bail pleas of K Kavitha, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader, in connection with corruption and money laundering cases linked to the alleged Delhi excise policy scandal.

The apex court had previously requested responses from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding Kavitha’s challenges to the Delhi High Court’s July 1 ruling, which had denied her bail.

According to the August 20 cause list on the Supreme Court’s website, Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan will review her pleas. On August 12, Kavitha’s counsel argued for bail, highlighting her five-month detention and the fact that both the CBI and ED have filed their charge sheets.

Kavitha’s lawyer referenced previous Supreme Court decisions, including interim bail granted to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and full bail for Aam Aadmi Party leader Manish Sisodia, both in connection with the same alleged scam.

The Delhi High Court had rejected Kavitha’s bail pleas, citing her role as a key conspirator in the alleged criminal activities surrounding the now-abandoned Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22. The CBI and ED have filed separate cases against Kavitha related to corruption and money laundering.

Arrested by the ED on March 15 at her Hyderabad residence and subsequently by the CBI on April 11, Kavitha has consistently denied the allegations. The High Court’s refusal to grant bail was based on the gravity of the charges and the ongoing investigation.

The High Court had previously overturned a trial court decision from May 6 that had dismissed Kavitha’s bail applications. Kavitha, daughter of former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, claimed that the charges against her are part of a political conspiracy orchestrated by the ruling party and aided by the ED.
