Kuwait City: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar Engages with Indian Community During Official Visit
External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar concluded a one-day official visit to Kuwait on Sunday, during which he met with prominent members of the Indian community and representatives from various professional and community associations.
In a social media post on platform X, Jaishankar expressed appreciation for the vibrant Indian community in Kuwait, highlighting their significant contributions to strengthening India-Kuwait relations. The Ministry of External Affairs noted that the EAM’s interactions underscored the role of the Indian diaspora as a vital bridge between the two nations.
Earlier in the day, Jaishankar held meetings with Kuwait’s Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah and Prime Minister Sheikh Muhammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah. These discussions provided an opportunity to review a broad spectrum of bilateral relations, including political, trade, investment, energy, security, cultural, consular, and people-to-people ties.
This visit follows Jaishankar’s previous official trip to Kuwait in June 2021, where he also engaged with the Kuwaiti leadership and delivered a letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Amir of Kuwait.
India and Kuwait share a long history of friendly relations, underpinned by deep trade connections. Before Kuwait’s independence in 1961, the Indian rupee was used as the legal tender. Historically, Kuwait’s economy was heavily reliant on maritime trade, including the exchange of goods such as dates, Arabian horses, and pearls with India, in return for wood, cereals, clothes, and spices.
