PRS Legislative Research to Host National Workshop on Employment Trends

New Delhi: In light of recent statistics indicating a significant rise in employment, PRS Legislative Research (PRS) will host a ‘National Workshop for State Legislators on Employment’ on August 22-23 in the national capital. The event will feature prominent economists and policymakers, including Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Jayant Chaudhary.

The workshop will address macroeconomic trends and their impact on employment generation, as well as an analysis of India’s employment trends over the years. Professor Pronab Sen, the First Chief Statistician of India, will set the stage with insights on both the organized and unorganized sectors. According to the Economic Survey 2023-24, the Indian economy must create an average of 7.85 million non-farm jobs annually until 2030 to meet the demands of the growing workforce.

Discussions will also explore the industrial sector’s potential and necessary regulatory and policy reforms to boost job creation. A key session will present a comprehensive overview of employment trends across India, including a cross-state comparison and projections for future opportunities, focusing on leveraging the demographic dividend.

Dr. V. Anantha Nageswaran, Chief Economic Advisor to the Government of India, will address strategies to enhance both employment opportunities and workforce employability. Additionally, Anil Bhardwaj, Secretary General of the Federation of Indian Micro and Small and Medium Enterprises, will highlight the challenges faced by MSMEs and propose solutions to facilitate their growth.

The latest data from the Ministry of Statistics reveals an increase in the Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) in urban areas, rising from 48.8 percent during April-June 2023 to 50.1 percent during April-June 2024, underscoring the relevance of the workshop’s focus.
