New Delhi: MEA Engages with Qatar Over Seizure of Guru Granth Sahib

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed its active engagement with the Qatari government following reports that the Guru Granth Sahib was recently seized by local authorities. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed the situation on Friday, providing clarity on the ongoing diplomatic efforts.

“We have been informed about the seizure of the Guru Granth Sahib by Qatari authorities and the Sikh community’s demand for its release. The Indian government has raised the issue with Qatar, and our Embassy in Doha has been updating the Sikh community on the developments,” Jaiswal stated in response to media inquiries.

The MEA clarified that two copies of the Guru Granth Sahib were taken from individuals or groups accused of operating a religious establishment without proper authorization from the Qatari government. “Our Embassy has offered all possible assistance in accordance with local laws and regulations,” Jaiswal added.

According to the MEA, one of the copies of the holy book has already been returned, while assurances have been given that the other copy is being kept “with respect.” The MEA is prioritizing follow-up actions with the Qatari authorities to ensure a swift resolution.

In parallel, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, former Union Cabinet Minister and current MP from Bathinda, has reached out to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Badal’s letter requested immediate intervention for the release of the remaining copy of the Guru Granth Sahib and highlighted the distress of the Sikh community in Qatar. She also urged for the facilitation of establishing Gurdwaras in Qatar to enable the practice of Sikhism.

“I informed the Minister that the Sikh community in Qatar is deeply shocked and distressed by the seizure of the Guru Granth Sahib, which is revered as the living Guru by the community. I have appealed for urgent intervention and support in allowing Sikhs to freely establish their own Gurdwaras,” Badal posted on X.

The MEA continues to engage with Qatar to resolve the issue and address the concerns of the Sikh community effectively.
