Jaishankar and Thai FM Discuss Strengthening Bilateral Ties in New Delhi
New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with his Thai counterpart, Maris Sangiampongsa, on Saturday to discuss the enhancement of bilateral ties, multilateral cooperation, and regional developments.
In a post on X, Jaishankar highlighted that Sangiampongsa’s visit, coinciding with the Royal Kathina ceremony, underscores the deep-rooted historical and cultural connections between India and Thailand. The Thai minister is set to depart India on Sunday after his official engagements.
“Delighted to meet FM @AmbPoohMaris of Thailand today in Delhi. His visit for the Royal Kathina ceremony exemplifies the longstanding historical and cultural relations between our two countries. We discussed India-Thailand ties, multilateral cooperation, and regional developments,” Jaishankar wrote.
The Royal Kathina ceremony is a traditional Buddhist event. This meeting follows Sangiampongsa’s earlier visit to India from July 11-13 for the second BIMSTEC Foreign Ministers’ Retreat, during which Jaishankar hosted a bilateral meeting and lunch in his honor.
During their previous discussions, the two ministers reviewed progress in various partnership areas and exchanged views on mutual interests. They reaffirmed their commitment to closer cooperation in sub-regional, regional, and multilateral forums, reflecting the vision of both prime ministers for a stronger India-Thailand partnership.
Thailand plays a crucial role as a partner for India in the ASEAN framework, aligning with India’s ‘Act East’ policy, now in its tenth year, which complements Thailand’s ‘Act West’ initiative. The ongoing dialogue between Jaishankar and Sangiampongsa has further solidified these bilateral ties.
