PM Modi and US President-elect Donald Trump Reaffirm Commitment to Strengthening Bilateral Ties
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President-elect Donald Trump have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the bilateral relationship between India and the United States across a range of sectors, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated on Thursday.
In a phone conversation held a day prior, Prime Minister Modi congratulated Trump on his “spectacular and resounding victory” in the US elections, acknowledging that his re-election as president reflected the “deep trust” of the American people in his leadership and vision. Modi also congratulated the Republican Party for its success in the Congressional elections.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
According to the MEA statement, both leaders discussed their mutual goal of advancing the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, with a particular focus on areas such as technology, defence, energy, space, and other key sectors. The leaders also reiterated their shared commitment to the benefit of the people of both nations and to global peace and stability.
The conversation underscored the positive trajectory of the bilateral relationship during Trump’s first term as president, with both leaders reflecting on their past interactions, including the memorable Howdy Modi event in Houston in September 2019 and the Namaste Trump event in Ahmedabad during Trump’s visit to India in February 2020. These events were pivotal in strengthening people-to-people ties and boosting bilateral cooperation between the two nations.
A Personal Connection
PM Modi, in his post on X (formerly Twitter), described his conversation with Trump as a “great” one and referred to the US leader as his “friend.” This personal camaraderie between the two leaders has been a hallmark of their relationship and has played an important role in cementing ties between India and the United States.
Trump’s Political Comeback
In what has been a remarkable political comeback, Donald Trump, 78, secured the victory to become the 47th President of the United States, defeating his Democratic rival Kamala Harris. Trump had previously served as the 45th President following his first win in the 2016 election. His re-election is viewed as a significant moment in US politics, and his renewed tenure is expected to influence global diplomacy, including India-US relations.
Looking Ahead
As both leaders prepare to work together in the coming years, the continued focus will be on strengthening the multifaceted partnership between the two largest democracies in the world. The mutual interest in areas such as trade, security, technological innovation, and environmental cooperation will remain at the forefront of their collaboration.
With Trump’s re-election marking the beginning of his second term, India’s strategic partnership with the United States is set to evolve further, with both nations committed to addressing global challenges and enhancing their collaborative efforts on the world stage.
