Amit Shah Reviews Manipur Violence Situation, Calls for Effective Security Measures

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah held an urgent review meeting with senior security officials on Sunday, addressing the escalating violence in Manipur. Shah, who cut short his campaign in Maharashtra to focus on the crisis, emphasized the need for decisive steps to restore peace and normalcy in the northeastern state.

The Home Minister directed top officials to take immediate action to maintain law and order, particularly following the recent wave of violence that has led to significant loss of life and widespread disruption. Sources indicate that Shah is scheduled for another round of discussions on Monday to assess further measures and strengthen security operations.

The meeting was attended by key officials, including Chief Security Advisor to the Manipur government Kuldiep Singh, Manipur Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi, and Director General of Police Rajiv Singh, who participated virtually from Imphal. The review came just a day after the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued a statement highlighting the fragile security situation in the state.

MHA has urged the public to remain calm and avoid rumors, calling for cooperation with security forces to restore peace. In a bid to control the unrest, the MHA has ordered strict action against individuals involved in violent activities. Several cases have been transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for further investigation.

Over the weekend, violence erupted in multiple districts, including Imphal East and Imphal West, where mobs attacked and vandalized the residences of political leaders and ministers. Protests escalated after the discovery of six bodies in the Jiribam district, believed to be of missing women and children. Assam Rifles, BSF, and local forces deployed tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowds, leaving over 15 injured.

Authorities imposed a curfew in Imphal East, West, Bishnupur, Thoubal, and Kakching districts to curb the unrest and prevent further violence. Additionally, mobile internet and data services were suspended in seven districts to prevent the spread of misinformation.

The situation remains tense, with continued efforts from both the state and central authorities to de-escalate the violence and ensure the safety of civilians.
