PM Modi Embarks on Historic Two-Day Visit to Kuwait to Strengthen Bilateral Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a landmark two-day visit to Kuwait, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the Gulf nation in 43 years. The trip, at the invitation of His Highness Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, the Amir of Kuwait, marks a significant step in enhancing the long-standing relationship between India and Kuwait.

In his departing statement, PM Modi expressed the deep historical connection between the two countries, emphasizing that India and Kuwait are not only strong trade and energy partners but also share mutual interests in promoting peace, security, stability, and prosperity in the West Asia region. “We deeply value the historical connection with Kuwait that has been nurtured over generations,” the Prime Minister said.

During his visit, PM Modi is scheduled to meet with the Amir, Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah, and the Prime Minister of Kuwait. These discussions will focus on strengthening the strategic partnership between the two nations and charting a roadmap for future collaboration. “This would be an opportunity to chalk out a road map for a futuristic partnership for the benefit of our people and the region,” PM Modi stated.

A key highlight of the visit will be PM Modi’s interaction with the Indian diaspora in Kuwait, who have played a crucial role in strengthening the bonds between the two countries. “I eagerly look forward to meeting the Indian diaspora in Kuwait who have immensely contributed to the strengthening of bonds of friendship between the two nations,” he added.

PM Modi also expressed his gratitude to Kuwait’s leadership for the invitation to attend the inauguration of the Arabian Gulf Cup, a prestigious sporting event in the Gulf region. He voiced confidence that this visit would further solidify the special ties between India and Kuwait, reinforcing the longstanding friendship between the peoples of both nations.

The visit underscores India and Kuwait’s traditionally close and friendly relations, which are deeply rooted in history and strengthened by robust economic ties. India is one of Kuwait’s top trading partners, and the Indian community, the largest expatriate group in the country, plays a pivotal role in fostering bilateral relations.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted that the visit provides a valuable opportunity to further enhance the multifaceted ties between the two countries. “The visit will further enhance the multifaceted ties between the two nations,” the MEA stated.

Upon his arrival in Kuwait, PM Modi will be accorded a ceremonial guard of honour at the Bayan Palace, the official residence of the Amir. The Prime Minister will then engage in high-level talks with the Kuwaiti leadership on critical issues, including trade, investment, energy cooperation, culture, and people-to-people exchanges.

Arun Kumar Chatterjee, Secretary (CPV & OIA) at the MEA, underscored the historic significance of the visit, noting that it is the first such visit by an Indian Prime Minister since Indira Gandhi’s trip in 1981. “India and Kuwait share excellent political relations, and this visit will further strengthen our bilateral ties,” he remarked.

Bilateral trade between India and Kuwait reached $10.47 billion in the 2023-24 fiscal year, with Kuwait playing a vital role in India’s energy sector. PM Modi’s visit is expected to further boost these economic linkages and open new avenues for cooperation between the two nations.

Throughout the visit, PM Modi will also focus on engaging with the Indian community in Kuwait, deepening cultural and economic ties, and further strengthening the enduring friendship between the two countries.
