Central Government Revokes No-Detention Policy for Grades 5 and 8
The central government has made a significant policy change regarding school education by revoking the no-detention policy for students in grades 5 and 8. Under this new directive, students in these grades must now pass their annual examinations in order to be promoted to the next grade. Failure to pass will result in the student repeating the same grade. However, a supplementary examination will be offered, allowing students who fail the annual exams an additional chance to pass. Only those who succeed in this retest will be eligible for promotion.
This policy revision will apply to approximately 3,000 schools under the central government’s purview, including Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas, and Sainik Schools.
It is worth noting that 16 states and two union territories have already repealed the no-detention policy for these grades. While the central government has made this change, the implementation of the revised regulation in schools remains at the discretion of the respective state governments, giving them the flexibility to decide how to apply the policy in their jurisdictions.
