Telangana Increases Retirement Age for University Professors to 65
In a significant move, the Telangana government has raised the retirement age for university professors from 60 to 65 years. This decision follows a proposal from the Telangana State Council of Higher Education, aimed at retaining experienced educators in the state’s universities.
Currently, there are 12 universities operating under the state’s higher education department, with a sanctioned total of 2,817 professor posts. However, only 757 of these positions are filled, resulting in a staggering 2,060 vacancies. To address this issue, the government has introduced the new retirement age policy, which is expected to help mitigate the shortage of professors.
The new policy will also impact key universities, including Osmania University, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad (JNTUH), and Kakatiya University, where two to three professors retire every month, further exacerbating the vacant position crisis.
This move is expected to benefit both the universities and students by retaining experienced faculty members and enhancing the quality of education in Telangana.
