Amit Shah Criticizes Congress After Delhi Assembly Election Defeat

Home Minister Amit Shah sharply criticized the Congress party on Saturday after it failed to secure a single seat in the Delhi Assembly elections. Shah attributed Congress’s poor performance to “worshipping its own family,” a remark aimed at the party’s leadership and its focus on the Gandhi family.

The results of the February 5 election for the 70-member Delhi Assembly, announced on Saturday, showed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning a commanding 48 seats, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) secured 22 seats. The Congress, however, failed to open its account in the assembly, continuing its decline in the national capital.

Taking to X, Shah wrote, “Congress is the biggest example of what happens to a party when it starts worshipping its own family. In Delhi, where the Congress government was in power for 15 years a decade ago, the Congress has not even opened its account in the 6 elections held since 2014.”

Shah further pointed out that the Congress had lost its deposit in 67 out of the 70 seats, reflecting the party’s diminishing presence. He emphasized that under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, Congress had failed to stabilize and was now dedicated to the service of a single family, a situation that reflected the party’s nationwide condition.

In response to the results, Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, expressed his acceptance of the Delhi mandate. He wrote on X, “We humbly accept the mandate of Delhi. Heartfelt thanks to all the Congress workers of the state for their dedication and all the voters for their support. This fight for the progress of Delhi and the rights of Delhiites – against pollution, inflation, and corruption – will continue.”

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera also reacted to the outcome, criticizing the reactions of certain liberal sections, who, he said, had not criticized AAP when it contested in states like Goa, Gujarat, and Haryana. He asserted that Congress, as the “real champion of liberal values,” would emerge stronger and continue its fight against the BJP.

Delhi Congress Chief Devender Yadav, reacting to the results, stated, “The results of the Delhi Assembly elections are a clear indication that the people of Delhi have rejected Arvind Kejriwal’s politics of lies and deceit. We will review our shortcomings and mistakes and will continue to serve the people of Delhi and will stand with the people of Delhi at every moment. The mandate of the people is supreme.”

The Congress’s failure to secure any seats in the capital has prompted introspection within the party, as it grapples with its diminishing influence in the national political landscape.
