Manu Bhaker Wins BBC ‘Indian Sportswoman of the Year’ Award for Outstanding Olympic Performance

Indian shooting sensation Manu Bhaker has been named the BBC ‘Indian Sportswoman of the Year’ for her exceptional performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she clinched two bronze medals. This prestigious award recognizes her remarkable achievements in shooting, marking a significant milestone in her career.

The 22-year-old shooter created history by becoming the first Indian woman to win two medals in a single Olympic Games. At the Paris Olympics, Bhaker earned a bronze in the 10m air pistol mixed team event and another bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol event, showcasing her consistency and skill on the world stage.

Her historic feat at the Olympics set her apart from other top female athletes nominated for the BBC award, including cricketer Smriti Mandhana, wrestler Vinesh Phogat, golfer Aditi Ashok, and para-shooter Avani Lekhara. Despite the strong competition, Bhaker emerged as the deserving winner, further solidifying her status as one of India’s finest shooters.

In addition to this prestigious recognition, Manu Bhaker was also honored by the Government of India with the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award earlier this year, the country’s highest sporting honor. Bhaker’s achievements continue to inspire young athletes and set new benchmarks in Indian sports, particularly in shooting.

With her unwavering dedication and exceptional performance, Manu Bhaker has firmly established herself as a trailblazer in Indian sports, and this recognition further cements her legacy in the country’s sporting history.
