Rohit Sharma Clinches Second ICC Title as India Triumphs in Champions Trophy

Rohit Sharma has etched his name further into the annals of Indian cricket history, becoming the second-most successful Indian captain in ICC tournaments after leading his team to victory in the 2025 Champions Trophy final against New Zealand at Dubai International Stadium. This win marks India’s second ICC title under Rohit’s leadership in less than nine months, following their T20 World Cup victory in 2024.

Under Rohit’s captaincy, India has now reached four consecutive ICC finals in just under two years, a remarkable feat that includes the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) final, the 2023 ODI World Cup, the 2024 T20 World Cup, and now the 2025 Champions Trophy. Rohit has become the first captain in international cricket to lead his team in all four major ICC event finals—an extraordinary accomplishment that cements his place among cricketing greats.

Rohit’s leadership has been crucial in India’s resurgence in ICC tournaments, ending the decade-long drought for an ICC title after the 2013 Champions Trophy win under MS Dhoni. In the 2025 final, Rohit’s solid 76-run knock set the tone for India’s chase of 252, which was completed with an over to spare. Shreyas Iyer (48) and K.L. Rahul (34*) guided the team home, supported by cameos from Axar Patel (29) and Hardik Pandya (18).

With this win, India also became the first country to win the Champions Trophy three times in the tournament’s history—a testament to the consistency and strength of the Indian team under Rohit’s captaincy.

This victory also places Rohit alongside the most legendary figures in Indian cricket history. While MS Dhoni remains the most successful Indian captain with three ICC titles, Rohit joins the ranks of Sourav Ganguly (2002 Champions Trophy) and Kapil Dev (1983 ODI World Cup) with two ICC titles.

March 9, 2025, now joins a prestigious list of dates in Indian cricket history, further solidifying India’s dominance on the global stage:

  • June 25, 1983 — First ODI World Cup title under Kapil Dev’s leadership
  • September 24, 2007 — First T20 World Cup under MS Dhoni’s captaincy
  • April 2, 2011 — Second ODI World Cup title in Mumbai under MS Dhoni
  • June 23, 2013 — Champions Trophy win under MS Dhoni
  • June 29, 2024 — Second T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma
  • March 9, 2025 — Third Champions Trophy win under Rohit Sharma

As India celebrates its third Champions Trophy title, Rohit Sharma’s leadership continues to inspire, making him a pivotal figure in Indian cricket for years to come.
