Case Filed Against Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda, and Team ‘Jaat’ for Allegedly Hurting Religious Sentiments

A legal case has been registered against Bollywood actors Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda, Vineet Kumar Singh, and director Gopichand Malineni over allegations of hurting religious sentiments through a scene in their latest film Jaat. The complaint, which centers around a portrayal involving Lord Jesus Christ, has prompted legal and community responses.

The case was filed at the Sadar Police Station in Jalandhar, Punjab, under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), following a written complaint by Vikalp Gold, a resident of Pholriwal village in Jalandhar.

According to the complaint, the film contains a controversial scene allegedly mimicking the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Reports indicate that Randeep Hooda’s character is shown standing beneath a crucifix in a church, positioned above the pulpit while congregants are seen praying — a depiction the complainant and members of the Christian community found offensive and disrespectful.

A day prior to the case being registered, members of the local Christian community staged a protest outside the office of the Police Commissioner in Jalandhar. They submitted a memorandum demanding action against the filmmakers and cast, urging authorities to uphold the sanctity of religious representation in cinema.

Directed by Gopichand Malineni, Jaat is an action-packed drama featuring a star-studded cast including Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda, Vineet Kumar Singh, and Regina Cassandra, with Urvashi Rautela making a special appearance in a dance number. The film marked Malineni’s Hindi directorial debut and was touted as Sunny Deol’s first major pan-India action film.

Amid the controversy, Sunny Deol announced the sequel “Jaat 2” on social media on April 17, sharing a new poster with the caption: “#Jaat on to a New Mission! #Jaat2.” The sequel will be produced by Naveen Yerneni, Ravi Shankar Y, and TG Vishwa Prasad under the banner of Mythri Movie Makers, who also backed the original film.

While the cast for Jaat 2 has not yet been fully announced, Deol’s return in the lead role has been confirmed. The development around the legal case, however, may cast a shadow over the film’s promotional activities and its future reception.

Neither the film’s producers nor the accused actors have issued an official statement regarding the controversy as of now.

The situation continues to unfold as legal proceedings move forward and calls for sensitivity in religious portrayals in mainstream cinema are once again brought to the forefront.
