Supreme Court Grants Conditional Relief to Teachers in WBSSC Recruitment Scam; Sourav Ganguly Declines to Join Protest

In a key development related to the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) recruitment scam, the Supreme Court of India has issued directives offering conditional relief to a section of affected teachers. The apex court ruled that individuals whose appointments were recently cancelled—but against whom no wrongdoing has been proven—may continue in their roles until a fresh recruitment process is completed.

The court emphasized that this interim relief is subject to specific conditions, the details of which are to be outlined in the final order. The ruling provides temporary stability to many educators whose careers were left in limbo following the large-scale cancellation of allegedly irregular appointments.

Teachers Reach Out to Sourav Ganguly

Amid the unfolding situation, a group of affected teachers visited the residence of former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly in Kolkata. They extended an invitation to him to participate in a planned protest scheduled for April 21 at the West Bengal Secretariat (Nabanna), aimed at drawing attention to their plight.

Ganguly, however, respectfully declined the invitation. According to reports, he expressed that the issue was not related to him and urged that he not be drawn into political controversies. The former cricketer reportedly reiterated his neutral stance, stating that while he sympathized with those impacted, he preferred not to engage in matters of political or administrative nature.

Background

The WBSSC recruitment scam has been a politically charged issue in West Bengal, with allegations of large-scale irregularities in the appointment of teaching and non-teaching staff in government schools. The scandal has led to multiple investigations and widespread legal scrutiny, resulting in several terminations and legal challenges.

With the Supreme Court’s latest order, attention now turns to the state government and the WBSSC to implement a transparent and accountable recruitment process moving forward.
