A.R. Rahman Reveals His Unique Strategy to Beat Mumbai Traffic
Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman, known for his soulful music and unconventional work habits, recently shared an interesting insight into how he manages to stay productive amidst the chaos of Mumbai’s notorious traffic.
In an exclusive interview with a media outlet, Rahman, who frequently travels between cities for work, was asked if he ever found himself frustrated by traffic snarls. With his characteristic charm, Rahman responded with a chuckle, “I never travel during the day.”
When asked if that meant he preferred working at night, the maestro confirmed, “Yeah, because in the night, there is no traffic. I can go anywhere. My click works only in the night.”
Rahman also revealed that his nocturnal schedule has been a consistent part of his life for decades. “This has been from the age of Taal. Like from that time. Doing the same thing,” he said, referring to the acclaimed 1999 musical drama that marked a significant milestone in his career.
Occasionally, Rahman said, he begins his day before dawn with a spiritual visit. “Sometimes, early in the morning, I go to the Dargah. Before the traffic comes back on, I go home and sleep,” he shared.
As for his daily routine, the composer noted that while he’s recently begun sleeping at night, his usual pattern involves waking up at 2:30 a.m. and winding down by 7:00 a.m.
Currently, Rahman is immersed in scoring music for filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s upcoming epic, Thug Life, starring veteran actor Kamal Haasan. Speaking at the launch of the film’s first single, Rahman revealed that he has been composing for the project for the past four months and remains deeply involved in the process.
“Every day I’ll be doing some things, sending it to Mani sir and asking him, ‘Is it good or not?’” he said. Highlighting the intensity of working on such a high-profile project, he added, “It is Kamal sir’s movie. He’s done everything. It’s like every scene for which I am scoring is looking at me and asking, ‘What are you gonna do?’”
Rahman’s dedication, unconventional rhythm, and spiritual discipline continue to fuel his creative genius, making him one of the most respected figures in the world of music and cinema.
