Chandrababu Naidu Recounts Early Political Journey at Book Launch of Mindset Shift
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu shared a powerful personal anecdote from his early political journey during the book launch of Mindset Shift, authored by Dr. Sharani, daughter of Minister Narayana. The event, held in Labbipet, Vijayawada, was attended by several dignitaries and marked by discussions on ambition, perseverance, and leadership.
Speaking as the chief guest, Naidu reflected on the formative years of his career, emphasizing the importance of determination, clarity of purpose, and the courage to pursue one’s vision against all odds.
A Vision Beyond Convention
Naidu revealed that he had decided to enter politics during his university years, despite encouragement from peers and professors to pursue a career in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). “Even when our Vice-Chancellor offered me a lecturer position, I declined. I told him I was contesting for an MLA seat, and that I would meet him again after winning — and I did,” he said, recalling the defining moment with pride.
After winning his first election and becoming a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), Naidu set his sights on a ministerial post. He narrated how his supporters approached the then Chief Minister Marri Chenna Reddy with a request to appoint him as a minister. The CM, taken aback by the boldness of the request, responded with disbelief: “You were a student until recently, and now you want to become a minister? Is this justice?”
From Archives to Influence
Unfazed by the skepticism, Naidu persisted. “I told him, if I have the merit, give me the position. I have completed my MA and I will pursue a PhD as well.” Within two years, he was inducted as a minister in Tanguturi Anjaiah’s cabinet, overseeing departments like Archives, Archaeology, Cinematography, Film Industry, and Libraries. While the departments were considered relatively minor, Naidu accepted the portfolio with commitment and used the opportunity to demonstrate his capability.
It was during this phase of public service, he noted, that he became closely acquainted with N. T. Rama Rao (NTR), a relationship that would go on to define a significant chapter in Andhra Pradesh’s political history.
On Chiranjeevi and Seizing Opportunities
Naidu also took a moment to reflect on the journey of renowned actor Chiranjeevi, describing him as an example of someone who succeeded through sheer willpower and resilience. “Chiranjeevi had a strong resolve to become an actor. Despite many hurdles, he made it. After N. T. Rama Rao entered politics, Chiranjeevi rose in the film industry — that was an opportunity,” he said.
Naidu stressed that both politics and the film industry reward those who are prepared, passionate, and ready to act when the right moment arrives.
A Message for the Future
In alignment with the themes of Mindset Shift, Naidu’s reflections offered an inspiring message: clear goals, perseverance, and self-belief are essential tools for anyone aiming to make a meaningful impact, whether in public service, arts, or academia.
The event concluded with an appreciation for Dr. Sharani’s book, which explores psychological and emotional resilience — a fitting theme for a day steeped in stories of ambition and achievement.
