UN Secretary-General Urges India and Pakistan to Exercise Maximum Restraint Amid Rising Tensions
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on India and Pakistan to exercise maximum restraint following recent escalations along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. The UN chief expressed deep concern over the situation, emphasizing the importance of avoiding further escalation and seeking peaceful solutions to the longstanding issues between the two nations.
The call for restraint comes after reports of unprovoked small-arms fire exchanged between Indian and Pakistani troops along the LoC. The UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) reported an increase in military activity in the region, although it does not have a presence in the specific area where the recent exchanges occurred
Secretary-General Guterres reaffirmed his belief that even the most challenging issues can be resolved peacefully through meaningful and constructive dialogue. He reiterated the UN’s readiness to support any initiatives, acceptable to both parties, that promote the resumption of dialogue and the de-escalation of tensions.
The UN chief also conveyed his solidarity with the families of the victims of the April 22 terrorist attack in the Baisaran Valley, which resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, including a Nepali national. He underscored the importance of accountability and justice in addressing such acts of violence.
As tensions continue to rise, the international community remains hopeful that both India and Pakistan will heed the UN’s call for restraint and work towards a peaceful resolution of their differences.
