The SAFF U19 Championship final had all the ingredients of a footballing epic—early drama, fierce intensity, moments of brilliance, and a nerve-shredding finish. At the end of it all, India emerged champions once again, holding off a spirited Bangladesh side 4-3 in a tense penalty shootout after the game ended 1-1 in regulation time.

The Golden Jubilee Stadium in Bhutan witnessed a rollercoaster of emotions on Sunday, May 18, as India’s U19 team, nicknamed the Blue Colts, successfully defended their title in a match that kept fans on the edge of their seats from the first whistle to the last kick.

India struck early in stunning fashion. Just two minutes into the game, captain Singamayum Shami showed remarkable vision and precision with a curling free-kick from over 30 yards out. Spotting Bangladesh’s goalkeeper Md Ismail Hossain Mahin slightly off his line, Shami’s thunderous effort slipped past the keeper’s outstretched glove and rippled the net—sending Indian fans into wild celebration.

Riding on the momentum, India dominated the early proceedings with fluid passing and aggressive wing play. Omang Dodum came close to doubling the lead in the 16th minute, weaving through defenders before being denied by a sharp save from Mahin.

However, Bangladesh gradually settled into the game. Gaining control of the midfield, they began to disrupt India’s rhythm and grow in confidence. Their persistence paid off in the 61st minute, when a goalmouth scramble off a corner allowed Md Joy Ahamed to slot home the equalizer—marking the first time India had conceded a goal in the tournament.

As regulation time ticked away, both teams pushed forward in search of a winner, but chances were hard to come by in a match that grew increasingly physical and tactical.

With the deadlock unbroken, the fate of the championship was left to penalties—and the shootout delivered its share of drama.

India stumbled early when Rohen Singh’s weak attempt was comfortably saved, giving Bangladesh the advantage. But the Blue Colts didn’t flinch. When Bangladesh captain Nazmul Huda Faysal sent his shot sailing over the bar, the momentum shifted back.

Goalkeeper Suraj Singh Aheibam rose to the occasion with a crucial save, diving low to deny Salahuddin Sahed. It was left to captain fantastic Shami to finish what he had started. With composure and confidence, he coolly slotted home the decisive kick—sealing a memorable 4-3 win for India.

Head coach Bibiano Fernandes praised his squad’s resilience: “This group has shown exceptional maturity and belief. To come through a high-pressure final like this speaks volumes of their character.”

With this win, India not only retained their SAFF U19 title but also sent a strong message across the region: the future of Indian football is in good hands.
