Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) mentor Dinesh Karthik has heaped praise on newly appointed skipper Rajat Patidar, commending the 32-year-old for his humility and unshakable character despite the responsibilities of leadership.
In the second episode of RCB’s Journey to the Finale, Karthik called Patidar “the biggest eye-opener” of his career — not for his skills alone, but for the rare consistency in his demeanor since assuming the captaincy.
“Power and recognition often change people — their attitude, their behavior, or how they interact. But Rajat has been an extraordinary exception. Even as RCB captain, he remains exactly the same person he was before the title. That’s incredibly rare in our sport,” Karthik remarked.
Patidar’s elevation to captaincy ahead of IPL 2025 surprised many, especially given his limited leadership credentials. His most notable experience came recently, leading Madhya Pradesh to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final. Yet, his calm presence and collaborative style have been instrumental in propelling RCB into their first IPL final in nine years. RCB sealed their spot in the title clash with a resounding eight-wicket win over Punjab Kings. The bowling unit dismantled PBKS for just 101 in 14.1 overs, and Phil Salt’s explosive 56 off 27 balls ensured a swift chase, completed in only 10 overs.
Director of Cricket Mo Bobat echoed Karthik’s sentiments, spotlighting Patidar’s composure and team-first approach.
“Rajat’s most impressive trait is his natural calmness. He leads with quiet authority and has smartly leaned on the experience around him — Jitesh as vice-captain, Virat Kohli, Krunal Pandya, and even Josh Hazlewood. That shared leadership has been crucial,” Bobat said. Bobat also credited the team’s early-season success for building momentum and confidence.
“We started strong with key away wins in Chennai and Mumbai, which set the tone. Though we had a rocky start at home, we found our rhythm. What stands out is how many different players have stepped up this season. That level of contribution speaks to the unity and strength of the squad,” he noted.
RCB’s remarkable campaign has been built on balance, belief, and the composed leadership of Rajat Patidar — a captain whose greatest strength may be his unwavering humility.
