Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with Ghana’s highest civilian award — the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana — on Wednesday, in recognition of his “distinguished statesmanship and influential global leadership.”
The prestigious honour was presented by Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama during Modi’s official visit, marking a significant moment in the deepening of diplomatic ties between India and Ghana.
Taking to social media, Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude:
“Honoured to be conferred with ‘The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana’. A testament to the deep and longstanding India-Ghana ties,” he posted on X.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that the Prime Minister dedicated the honour to the 1.4 billion people of India and the historic relationship shared with Ghana. “He thanked the government and people of Ghana for this exceptional honour,” Jaiswal added.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar echoed the sentiment, calling the award a recognition of Prime Minister Modi’s efforts to amplify the voice of the Global South and further Indo-African cooperation.According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Prime Minister Modi accepted the award on behalf of all Indians, dedicating it to India’s youth, its rich cultural heritage, and the enduring friendship between the two democracies.
Modi emphasized that this recognition not only celebrates shared values but also brings with it a renewed responsibility to elevate bilateral ties.
“This honour deepens our friendship and adds new responsibility to strengthen our cooperation,” the Prime Minister said.
This landmark moment came during PM Modi’s historic state visit — the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Ghana in three decades — and follows his wide-ranging discussions with President Mahama. The two nations also upgraded their relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership. The Ghana visit marks the first stop in Modi’s five-nation tour, aimed at advancing India’s diplomatic and economic engagement with Africa and beyond.
