Hyderabad: The Telangana government led by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy of the Congress party has announced plans to entrust the maintenance of government schools to women self-help groups (SHGs) beginning in the upcoming academic year.
Under the initiative named “Amma Adarsha Patashala,” committees will be established at each school comprising the SHG president, the headmistress, and three mothers of students. These committees will play a pivotal role in approving civil works within government schools. Each committee will have a budget of up to Rs 25,000 per school for infrastructure improvements and maintenance tasks.
At the mandal level, officers will have the authority to allocate funds up to Rs 1 lakh, while district collectors will be empowered to approve expenditures exceeding Rs 1 lakh per government school in Telangana.
The state government has allocated Rs 600 crore for this initiative and instructed officials to identify and complete all necessary works in government schools by June 10, in preparation for reopening on June 12 following the summer vacation.
The committees will oversee repairs to windows, doors, electric switchboards, fans, and toilets in schools. Additionally, the responsibility of stitching school uniforms has been assigned to women self-help societies.
This initiative aims to enhance the quality of education by upgrading school infrastructure and fostering community involvement in school management.
