Iran’s Interim President Appoints Ali Bagheri Kani as Caretaker Foreign Minister

Tehran: Iran’s Interim President Mohammad Mokhber has appointed Ali Bagheri Kani as the country’s caretaker Foreign Minister, according to reports from the Xinhua news agency. Bagheri Kani, previously Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs, assumes this role following the tragic deaths of Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, President Ebrahim Raisi, and other senior officials in a helicopter crash in East Azerbaijan province on Sunday.

In his decree, President Mokhber expressed his confidence in Bagheri Kani’s ability to successfully fulfill his responsibilities as the new Foreign Minister. He emphasized the importance of continuing the Foreign Ministry’s activities, particularly in matters of active diplomacy concerning the Palestine issue and reinforcing the resistance axis within the framework of established documents and principles.

Bagheri Kani brings extensive experience to his new role, having served as Iran’s chief negotiator in the talks aimed at revitalizing the 2015 nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), with world powers. These negotiations began in April 2021 in Vienna, Austria.
