Indian Film Competes for Palme d’Or at Cannes After Three Decades
Indian films are regularly screened at the Cannes Film Festival, with Anurag Kashyap being a prominent filmmaker known for showcasing his work at this prestigious event held in the south of France.
One significant reason for filmmakers to present their work at Cannes is to introduce it to European distributors and to boost the film’s public relations in India.
This year, for the first time in three decades, an Indian film will compete for the Palme d’Or, the highest honor awarded at Cannes and one of the most prestigious accolades in global cinema. Filmmaker Payal Kapadia’s film “All We Imagine as Light” will vie for this esteemed prize. The film is set to premiere at the festival today. The last Indian film to be selected for this competition was the Malayalam film Swaham (1994), directed by Shaji N. Karun.
Set in Mumbai, “All We Imagine as Light” stars Kani Kusruti, Chhaya Kadam, Divya Prabha, and Hridhu Haroon in leading roles. Kani and Divya portray nurses embarking on a journey of self-discovery in this Malayalam-Hindi film. This marks Payal Kapadia’s second film. She studied filmmaking at FTII and also attended The Rishi Valley School near Madanapalle, Andhra Pradesh.
