New Delhi: According to the latest data released by the Election Commission of India, the Congress party is currently leading in 97 Lok Sabha constituencies, prompting jubilation among party members.
If this momentum continues, it could mark the party’s strongest electoral performance since 2014. In the previous elections, the Congress secured 44 seats in 2014 and 52 seats in 2019. During its tenure leading the United Progressive Alliance in 2009, the party had achieved a substantial 206-seat victory.
However, in 2014, under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, the Congress faced a significant setback, losing 162 seats and experiencing a notable drop of 9.3% in its vote share.
In contrast, the BJP maintained its dominance in 2019, securing 303 seats independently and 353 seats with its coalition partners in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
The BJP’s success was particularly pronounced in the Hindi belt, where it captured 74 seats in Uttar Pradesh, 39 in Bihar, and 28 in Madhya Pradesh. Additionally, the party swept Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Delhi, securing a total of 77 seats from these states. With additional wins in Chhattisgarh (9 seats) and Jharkhand (11 seats), the BJP garnered a formidable tally of 238 seats from this region alone.
In contrast, the Congress, led by Rahul Gandhi, faced challenges in the Hindi belt, managing to secure only six seats independently and seven seats in alliance with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha.
The electoral defeat of Rahul Gandhi in Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi constituency was a notable setback for the Congress party.
