Tarouba: West Indies Secure Super Eight Berth with Victory Over New Zealand
The West Indies eliminated former runners-up and last edition’s semifinalist New Zealand from the T20 World Cup with a 13-run victory in their Group C match.
This victory, their third consecutive win, ensured tournament co-hosts West Indies a place in the Super Eight, two years after failing to advance to the main round of the T20 World Cup in Australia.
Sherfane Rutherford played a pivotal role, scoring an unbeaten 68 off 39 balls, including six sixes and two fours, to propel West Indies to 149 for 9 from a precarious 76 for 7 in 12.3 overs.
In response, the West Indies restricted New Zealand to 136 for 9 in 20 overs. Rutherford’s fellow Guyanese, left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie, delivered impressive figures of 3/25. However, it was pacer Alzarri Joseph who was the standout performer, claiming 4 for 19.
For New Zealand, Glenn Phillips contributed a 33-ball 40.
