Protests Erupt at TGPSC Office as Karne Sirisha and Others Detained

Hyderabad: Karne Sirisha, popularly known as Barrelakka, was detained by Telangana police near the Telangana Public Service Commission (TGPSC) office on Friday, July 5.

Tensions escalated at the TGPSC office as students, led by members of the Unemployed Joint Action Committee (JAC) and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi Vidyarthi (BRSV) affiliated with the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) party, attempted to lay siege with several demands for the state government.

Barrelakka participated in the protests at the TGPSC office, demanding an increase in Group 2 and 3 posts and the scheduling of an exam in December. The protestors also called for the postponement of the District Selection Committee (DSC) exams for three months until October.

During the protests, Sirisha raised slogans against CM Revanth Reddy as she was forcibly removed by the police.

Sirisha, a BCom graduate and cattle herder, gained attention during elections in Telangana by contesting Assembly and Lok Sabha polls as an Independent candidate to demonstrate that an ordinary individual can garner votes without distributing money, liquor, or using muscle power.

The police also detained BRSV leader Gellu Srinivas Yadav and others during the protest.

BRS senior leader T Harish Rao condemned the detentions and questioned whether students are permitted to protest under the current administration.

“The Congress government has driven students, who should be studying, to the streets to protest. The BRS party, the main opposition, will not stand idly by if the government makes promises before elections and fails to deliver afterward. We will persist until the issues are resolved and the demands are met. We will advocate for students and the unemployed. On behalf of the BRS party, we demand the government immediately halt the arrests of students, student union leaders, and the unemployed, and release those detained and arrested,” he stated.
