Amitabh Bachchan Applauds Son Abhishek for Championing Rugby in India
Veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan on Monday took to social media to shower praise on his son, Abhishek Bachchan, for taking a bold step towards diversifying the Indian sports ecosystem by championing the sport of rugby.
The Bollywood legend shared a video clip of Abhishek from the launch of the GMR Rugby Premier League (GMR RPL) on Instagram, expressing his pride in his son’s latest venture.
“So good Abhishek for introducing a sport for India… momentous… and you are soo good. Love you,” he wrote in the caption, tagging Abhishek and adding hashtags such as #Rugby, #Sports, #Trending, and #Bachchan. In the video, Abhishek—who is already known for his active role in promoting Indian sports—expressed his excitement at bringing the sport to a new audience.
“I’m extremely excited. It’s a momentous occasion in Indian sport and Indian rugby. GMR Pro Rugby League starts today. We’re all here for the opening. 30 of the best players in the world, 30 of India’s best players. It’s going to be a memorable, memorable night.”
The GMR RPL, which kicks off on June 15 in Mumbai, marks the first professional rugby league of its kind in India. Played in the high-octane Rugby Sevens format, the league features six franchise teams competing in four quarters of four minutes each, promising an action-packed experience for fans.
This isn’t the first time Abhishek has ventured into the world of sports. He has previously owned teams in kabaddi and football, consistently backing sports that lie outside cricket’s dominant shadow. With rugby, he hopes to bring new energy and awareness to yet another underrepresented sport in India.
Amitabh Bachchan, 82, has remained a vocal supporter of Abhishek’s career—both in films and beyond. Just days before this, he had shared a lighthearted post on Instagram, reacting to a behind-the-scenes clip from Abhishek’s recent film, “Housefull 5.” “Hahahaha… what a fun fun fun…!!” the Sholay actor wrote, reacting to a humorous dance rehearsal video from the song Laal Pari.
“Housefull 5” released in theatres on June 6 and has been generating buzz for its over-the-top comedy and ensemble cast.
