Streamlining LPG Distribution: Aadhaar-based eKYC to Weed Out Bogus Customers
New Delhi: In a proactive move aimed at enhancing transparency and efficiency in LPG distribution, state-owned oil companies have implemented Aadhaar-based eKYC authentication for LPG customers to combat the misuse of commercial cylinders, Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced.
The initiative, operational for over eight months, targets the elimination of fraudulent practices where commercial cylinders are booked under the names of domestic consumers. Under current regulations, households purchase domestic LPG cylinders at Rs 803 per 14.2-kg unit, whereas commercial entities like hotels and restaurants are required to procure 19-kg commercial cylinders at Rs 1,646 each.
Responding to concerns raised by V D Satheesan, Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, regarding perceived hardships faced by consumers, Puri clarified that the Aadhaar-based eKYC process does not involve mandatory customer registration (mustering) at gas agencies. Instead, delivery personnel capture Aadhaar credentials via a mobile app during cylinder delivery. Customers subsequently receive an OTP for authentication, with the option to complete eKYC through oil company apps or at distributor showrooms.
With approximately 32.64 crore active domestic LPG users across India, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, through its Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), continues to assure consumers of minimal disruption and emphasizes the safeguarding of genuine customer interests in this drive against malpractice.
This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging digital solutions for efficient service delivery and ensuring the integrity of LPG distribution systems nationwide.
