Aadhaar Face Authentication Transactions Surge, Benefiting Citizens and Sectors Nationwide
The Aadhaar face authentication solution, developed by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), has experienced substantial growth, with over 78% of all Aadhaar-based transactions in FY25 being completed via face authentication, the government revealed on Tuesday.
Since its introduction in October 2022, UIDAI has recorded over 130.5 crore transactions, with nearly 102 crore occurring in the 2024-25 financial year alone. This marks a significant rise in the adoption of the face authentication technology, signaling its widespread acceptance across various sectors.
In the January-March period of 2025, almost 39.5 crore face authentication transactions were processed. March saw a significant increase, with more than 15.25 crore transactions recorded, reflecting a 21.6% growth compared to the previous month.
The Ministry of Information Technology attributed this success to the growing trust and seamless adoption of face authentication across diverse sectors, including fintech, telecommunications, and finance. Government services have also integrated this biometric solution to improve the efficiency of delivering benefits under various schemes like PM Awas (Urban), PM-JAY, PM Kisan, PM Ujjwala, and more.
Face authentication has proven particularly beneficial for senior citizens and individuals whose fingerprints may be difficult to capture due to health or manual labor-related reasons. This AI-driven technology, available on both Android and iOS platforms, provides a secure, contactless, and user-friendly way to authenticate identity. The system is designed to prevent video replay attacks and counter attempts at static photo authentication, ensuring robust security.
At present, 102 government and private entities are utilizing Aadhaar face authentication, which continues to be a trusted method for verifying identity, offering both convenience and enhanced security standards.
