Amit Shah Commemorates Hyderabad Liberation Day, Hails Patriotism of the Region

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday commemorated Hyderabad Liberation Day, praising the people of the erstwhile Hyderabad region for their valor and patriotism in the fight against the tyrannical rule of the Nizam to join the Union of India.

In a message posted on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), Shah highlighted the significance of the Hyderabad Mukti Sangram, describing it as a “glorious manifestation of patriotism” where the people of Telangana, Karnataka, and Marathwada rose against oppression. He paid homage to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the integration of Hyderabad into India.

On September 17, 1948, Hyderabad, then under Nizam’s rule, was annexed into India following military action led by then Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Shah’s remarks underscore the enduring legacy of the Hyderabad Liberation Day, which marks the region’s transition to become an integral part of India.

Additionally, Shah extended greetings in Marathi to the people of Maharashtra’s Marathwada region on Marathwada Liberation Day. He recognized their collective struggle and resilience in overcoming the atrocities committed by the Nizams and Razakars, a private militia that had defended the Nizam’s regime and opposed Hyderabad’s merger with India.

“Today we commemorate the struggle of the people of Marathwada who fought unitedly, overcoming the atrocities of the Nizams and Razakars. Salute to all the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the unity of the nation!” Shah said in his Marathi post.

The Razakars, who had called for Hyderabad to either join Pakistan or become a Muslim dominion, were known for their resistance to the merger with India and for the violence they perpetrated during that period. The collective resistance led by the people of the region played a pivotal role in the successful integration of Hyderabad into the Indian Union.
