Delhi CM Kejriwal Announces Surrender on June 2 as Interim Bail Ends
New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced on Friday that he will surrender at 3 p.m. on June 2, as his interim bail, granted by the Supreme Court during the general elections, ends on June 1.
“The Supreme Court provided me with 21 days for election campaigning. Today marks the end of those 21 days. The day after tomorrow, I will return to Tihar Jail,” stated CM Kejriwal during a virtual press conference from the national capital.
He further added, “I do not know how long my imprisonment will last. My spirits remain high, and I am proud to go to jail in defense of democracy.”
Reflecting on his previous incarceration, Kejriwal said, “They attempted to break my resolve in various ways, tried to bend me, and tried to silence me, but they did not succeed.”
Criticizing the BJP, he elaborated, “During my time in jail, I was mistreated in various ways. They stopped my medications despite my serious diabetes, for which I have been taking insulin injections daily for the past ten years.”
“They halted my injections for many days in jail, causing my sugar levels to reach 300 to 325. Prolonged high sugar levels can damage the kidneys and liver. During my 50-day imprisonment, I lost 6 kgs. My weight dropped from 70 kg to 64 kg,” he claimed.
“Even after my release, I have not regained the lost weight. Doctors suggest this could indicate a serious illness requiring further tests. I will surrender the day after tomorrow, leaving home around 3 p.m. They may harass me more this time, but I will not bow down,” said CM Kejriwal, urging people to take care of his elderly parents while he is imprisoned.
On Thursday, a Delhi court issued a notice to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) seeking its response to CM Kejriwal’s regular bail plea in connection with a money laundering case related to the alleged excise policy scam.
Special Judge Kaveri Baweja of Rouse Avenue Court also sought the agency’s reply on his plea seeking interim bail for a week on medical grounds.
