Hyderabad: Asaduddin Owaisi, Chief of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), emphasized on Tuesday that it is important for India’s youth to understand that the Supreme Court has described the demolition of Babri Masjid as an “egregious criminal act.” Owaisi’s remarks came in response to the decision by the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to replace references to Babri Masjid with “three-domed structure.”
In a statement on the micro-blogging site X, Owaisi stated, “The NCERT has chosen to substitute Babri Masjid with the term ‘three-domed structure.’ It has also characterized the Ayodhya judgment as an instance of ‘consensus.’ It is crucial for India’s children to recognize that the Supreme Court has labeled the demolition of Babri Masjid as an ‘egregious criminal act.'”
He continued, “Our children should be informed that a functioning mosque was desecrated in 1949 and subsequently destroyed by a mob in 1992. We must not allow them to romanticize criminal deeds.”
Owaisi had previously remarked on the NCERT Director Dinesh Prasad Saklani’s defense of alterations to references regarding the demolition of Babri Masjid and the Gujarat riots in school textbooks, cautioning, “Those who do not learn from history are destined to repeat it.”
Dinesh Prasad had argued that teaching about riots could lead to the creation of violent and despondent citizens.
