Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has officially announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs), effective immediately, as he shifts focus to next year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and other global T20 leagues.
Maxwell, who made his ODI debut in August 2012, leaves the 50-over format after a decorated career that spanned 149 matches, scoring 3,990 runs and taking 77 wickets. He played instrumental roles in Australia’s World Cup triumphs in 2015 and 2023.
His final ODI appearance came against India earlier this year during the ICC Champions Trophy.
Strategic Shift Towards T20 Focus
Speaking on the Final Word Podcast, Maxwell explained his decision, citing physical demands and long-term planning for Australia’s future ODI side.
“I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how my body was reacting to the conditions,” Maxwell said. “I had a good chat with [Chair of Selectors] George Bailey and told him I don’t think I’ll make it to the 2027 World Cup. It’s time for others to step in and make the position their own.”
He emphasized that the decision wasn’t taken lightly.
“I always said I wouldn’t hand over my place unless I felt it was the right time. I didn’t want to hold on for selfish reasons. The team is moving in a clear direction, and this gives them the best opportunity to build towards the next World Cup.”
A Career Highlight to Remember
One of Maxwell’s most iconic performances came during the 2023 ODI World Cup against Afghanistan at Wankhede Stadium. Battling cramps, he delivered an unforgettable unbeaten 201 off 128 balls, rescuing Australia from 91/7 to chase down 293 — a knock widely hailed as one of the greatest in ODI history.
“I’m extremely fortunate to have had that moment,” Maxwell reflected. “To show the world the best of what I could offer — that’s something I’ll always cherish.”
Tributes and Future Outlook
Australia’s Chief Selector George Bailey lauded Maxwell’s contribution:
“Glenn will be remembered as one of the most dynamic players in the one-day format. His natural talent, energy, underrated bowling, and passion for Australia were second to none. We’re fortunate he still has a lot to offer in T20 cricket.”
Maxwell, who last played for Punjab Kings in IPL 2025 before being sidelined with a finger injury, is expected to return in time for the Major League Cricket season in the United States, which begins in under two weeks.
He is also in contention for Australia’s T20I squad for the five-match series in the Caribbean, set to commence on July 20 following the conclusion of the Test series.
