Axar Patel Fined ₹12 Lakh for Slow Over Rate in IPL 2024 Clash Against Mumbai Indians
Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel has been handed a significant blow following his team’s narrow 10-run defeat to Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The IPL advisory committee has imposed a fine of ₹12 lakh on the all-rounder for maintaining a slow over rate during the match held at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday.
In an official statement, the league confirmed that Delhi Capitals failed to complete their 20 overs within the allotted time, prompting disciplinary action in accordance with the IPL Code of Conduct. This is part of the tournament’s ongoing effort to ensure prompt play and minimize delays in match progression.
Axar becomes the sixth captain in this season’s IPL to be penalized for over-rate violations. Other captains who have faced similar sanctions include Sanju Samson (Rajasthan Royals), Riyan Parag (Rajasthan Royals – stand-in), Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians), Rishabh Pant (Delhi Capitals), and Rajat Patidar (Royal Challengers Bengaluru – acting captain).
Such fines are typically levied on the first offence, with higher penalties and potential match suspensions applicable for repeat violations. The IPL has continued to emphasize time management as a crucial part of maintaining the league’s fast-paced appeal.
While the fine doesn’t affect Axar Patel’s availability for upcoming matches, it adds pressure on the Delhi Capitals’ leadership group to manage field time more efficiently, especially as the tournament heads into a critical mid-season phase.
