Congress leader and former Indian cricket captain Mohammed Azharuddin’s son, Mohammed Asaduddin, has been appointed General Secretary of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC), marking his formal entry into political leadership.
The Congress announced a significant reshuffle in its Telangana unit on Monday, naming 27 vice-presidents and 69 general secretaries as part of its organisational revamp. The appointments were approved by party president Mallikarjun Kharge.Azharuddin, a former Member of Parliament and current Working President of the TPCC, took to social media to share his pride and optimism about his son’s new political journey.
“A proud and emotional moment for me as my son, Mohammed Asaduddin, steps into his official role in public life as the General Secretary of the Telangana Congress,” Azharuddin wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
“I’ve seen his commitment to people, his passion for service, and his sincerity up close. May he stay grounded, focused, and guided by the values that truly matter. Wishing him all the very best as he takes on this responsibility.”
Mohammed Asaduddin, a domestic cricketer and the eldest son from Azharuddin’s first marriage, is also known in public circles for his marriage to Anam Mirza, the sister of Indian tennis icon Sania Mirza. Azharuddin himself contested the 2023 Telangana Assembly elections from the Jubilee Hills constituency in Hyderabad, but was defeated by BRS leader Maganti Gopinath by over 16,000 votes. Gopinath, the sitting MLA, passed away on June 8 following a cardiac arrest, leading to speculation that Azharuddin may be renominated by the Congress in the upcoming by-election.
Azharuddin was first elected to the Lok Sabha from Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh in 2009. Though he contested unsuccessfully from Rajasthan’s Tonk-Sawai Madhopur in 2014, he remained active in the party, especially in Telangana, where he was appointed Working President of the state unit in 2018. The induction of Asaduddin signals a new chapter in the family’s evolving political legacy and adds youthful energy to the Congress’s strategy in the state ahead of the crucial by-polls.
