New Delhi: Esteemed wrestlers Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia expressed their appreciation for the decision of a Delhi court to formally charge former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh with sexual harassment allegations. They hailed this development as a significant victory for women wrestlers across the nation.
The Delhi court, on Friday, directed the framing of charges against Singh, a seasoned Lok Sabha MP, under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354A (sexual harassment), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC.
In response, Bajrang Punia, the Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist and a prominent figure in the protest against Singh, emphasized the significance of this decision for women wrestlers. He underscored the resilience of the country’s daughters in facing adversity and expressed hope for justice. Additionally, he condemned those who disparaged women wrestlers and asserted the triumph of truth.
Sakshi Malik, the Rio Olympic bronze medallist and another leading voice in the protest against Singh, extended gratitude to the honorable court for its decision. She reflected on the arduous journey of the protest, which involved enduring hardships and sacrificing stable careers, and acknowledged the support received from well-wishers. Malik also extended blessings to those who opposed the cause, highlighting the enduring spirit of India.
Together with wrestler Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi and Bajrang emerged as prominent figures in the year-long protest, which commenced in January 2023 at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. Following extensive demonstrations, the Delhi Police filed a charge sheet against Singh on June 15, citing multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including assault, sexual harassment, stalking, and criminal intimidation.
The court is scheduled to formally frame the charges on May 21, marking a crucial step forward in the pursuit of justice.
