BRS Condemns Torture of Dalit Woman by Police, Demands Action
Hyderabad, August 5, 2024 — The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has strongly condemned the alleged torture of a Dalit woman by police personnel at the Shadnagar Police Station in the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate. The incident, which came to light on August 4, involves claims of severe mistreatment in connection with a theft investigation.
BRS Working President K.T. Rama Rao has called for immediate action, demanding that a case be filed under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against those involved. Rama Rao expressed his outrage on X (formerly Twitter), criticizing the Congress government as “anti-Dalit, anti-women” and demanding justice for the victim.
According to reports, the 34-year-old woman was summoned to the police station on July 24 under suspicion of gold theft. The allegations include that she was assaulted in front of her minor son and was coerced into confessing. The woman, a daily wage laborer, alleged that police personnel stripped her, tied her up, and tortured her despite her pleas for mercy. She claimed that her husband was also beaten before being released, and she was detained for six hours until she nearly lost consciousness.
In response to the allegations, Shadnagar Inspector (Detective) A. Ramireddy has been reassigned to the commissionerate headquarters pending an inquiry. The Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) of Shadnagar is overseeing the investigation, with further actions to be determined based on the inquiry report.
The woman was reportedly forced to confess involvement in the theft of 20 tolas of gold and Rs 2 lakh in cash from a locked house. She alleged that threats from the complainants, who reportedly warned of setting her and her family on fire if she sought medical help, further compounded her ordeal.
The BRS has demanded a thorough investigation and accountability for those responsible, emphasizing the need for justice in light of these serious allegations.
