Chidambaram Critiques J&K Governance, Calls for Restoration of Full Statehood
New Delhi: In the wake of a security review meeting chaired by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram raised concerns about the state of governance in the region. He emphasized that while the people have elected a chief minister and government to ensure their security, the current chief minister lacks the authority to do so.
In a post on X, Chidambaram pointed out the implications of the LG presiding over the law and order review meeting, notably the absence of the elected chief minister. “Whether he was invited or not, I do not know. Under the law applicable to J&K, police and public order are subjects reserved for the LG,” he stated, highlighting the disconnect between the elected officials and the administration.
Chidambaram further remarked that the chief minister’s lack of authority contributes to the perception of Jammu and Kashmir as “half a state.” He reiterated the urgent need for the immediate restoration of full statehood to J&K, arguing that it is imperative for the region’s governance and security.
The backdrop to these comments is the recent deadly terror attack in the Gagangir area of Ganderbal district, where seven individuals—including a local doctor and six non-local laborers—were killed. The attack, claimed by the TRF, a shadow group of Lashkar-e-Taiba, underscores the ongoing security challenges in the region.
In response to the rising security concerns, LG Sinha directed a comprehensive security audit of infrastructure projects, the establishment of round-the-clock checkpoints at strategic locations, and intensified night patrolling in the Valley. The security review meeting, held at Raj Bhawan in Srinagar, included key officials such as the Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat and Principal Secretary Home Department Chandraker Bharti.
During the meeting, Sinha urged J&K Police officials to implement stringent measures to enhance the security framework surrounding key infrastructure projects and construction camps, aiming to ensure the safety of workers. He also stressed the importance of regular coordination meetings with project implementing agencies to bolster security efforts.
As the situation in Jammu and Kashmir continues to evolve, the discourse around governance, security, and statehood remains at the forefront of political discussions, with leaders like Chidambaram advocating for substantial reforms.
