New Delhi: The Congress intensified its criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his ‘redistribution of wealth’ statement, highlighting that over 40% of the wealth generated in India from 2012 to 2021 was accumulated by just 1% of the population. The party emphasized that only an INDIA bloc government can achieve a significantly more inclusive economic growth.
During a rally in Rajasthan on Sunday, Prime Minister Modi had alleged that if the Congress were to come to power, it would redistribute the wealth of the people to “infiltrators” and those with larger families. He referenced former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s statement suggesting that the minority community had the first claim on the country’s resources.
Responding to the Prime Minister’s remarks, the Congress accused him of resorting to “falsehoods” and “divisive rhetoric” to distract the public from genuine concerns, particularly following the party’s perceived setbacks in the initial phase of the Lok Sabha elections.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh stated on social media platform X on Tuesday, “The Prime Minister fails to acknowledge that more than 40% of the wealth generated in the country from 2012 to 2021 has been accrued by just 1% of the population.”
Ramesh further highlighted that approximately 64% of the total Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue is contributed by the poor, lower-middle class, and middle class.
He alleged, “A majority of the public assets and resources sold over the past decade have been acquired by one or two companies. Economists have indicated that the increasing monopolization of the economy has resulted in higher inflation.”
Ramesh also pointed out that 21 billionaires in India possess more wealth than 70 crore Indians combined.
“India requires accelerated economic growth, significantly more inclusive economic growth, and substantially more ecologically sustainable growth. Only INDIA can and will deliver this triad,” Ramesh asserted.
