Congress MP Manickam Tagore Calls for Amit Shah’s Apology and Resignation Over Remarks on Dr. Ambedkar
Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Friday submitted an Adjournment Motion notice in the Lok Sabha, urging an urgent discussion on Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s controversial remarks made during his Constitution Day speech in the Rajya Sabha. Tagore demanded that Shah apologize unconditionally and resign, alleging that his comments undermined the principles of social justice and equality championed by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of India’s Constitution.
Tagore described Shah’s remarks as “unacceptable,” asserting that they reflected “a deep-seated disdain for the principles of social justice and equality that Dr. Ambedkar fought for throughout his life.” He further urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take immediate action and remove Shah from his position, claiming that the remarks had brought “disrepute to the office of the Home Minister.”
In his notice, Tagore emphasized that Shah’s statements were disrespectful to Dr. Ambedkar and offensive to millions of Indians, particularly the Dalit community. He called for the House to condemn Shah’s comments “in the strongest possible terms.”
Tagore’s request came after he had earlier submitted a similar Adjournment Motion notice, stressing the urgent need to address what he called an “insult” to Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy. According to Tagore, the remarks had deeply hurt the Dalit community and millions of others who revere Ambedkar as a guiding figure for social justice and empowerment.
The controversy sparked widespread political protests, with the opposition INDIA bloc organizing a march demanding Shah’s removal from the Cabinet. In a counter-protest, BJP MPs led by Anurag Thakur accused the Congress party of disrespecting the Constitution and Dr. Ambedkar, chanting slogans such as “Congress party maafi maango, Ambedkar ka apmaan nahi sahega Hindustan” (Congress must apologize, India will not tolerate the insult to Ambedkar).
