New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has urgently requested the Supreme Court to expedite his plea seeking a seven-day extension of his interim bail for undergoing crucial medical tests. Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, representing the chief minister, approached a vacation bench comprising Justices JK Maheshwari and KV Viswanathan, highlighting the need for immediate attention despite the pending judgment on the main matter.
The bench questioned Singhvi on why Kejriwal’s plea wasn’t prioritized last week, especially when Justice Dipankar Datta, a member of the main bench that initially granted interim bail, was available during the vacation session.
Kejriwal’s plea cites the necessity for further medical examinations, including a PET-CT scan, due to sudden weight loss and elevated ketone levels, suggesting potential kidney, cardiac, or oncological concerns.
In his recent filing on May 26, the chief minister requested a delay in surrendering to prison authorities from June 2 to June 9, aligning with his medical treatment needs.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had granted Kejriwal interim bail for 21 days starting May 10 to facilitate his participation in the Lok Sabha election campaign. The directive mandated his surrender on June 2, a day after the final phase of polling, pertaining to allegations of corruption and money laundering associated with Delhi’s now-defunct excise policy for 2021-22.
