New Delhi: The Delhi High Court is set to deliver its verdict on Tuesday regarding an Enforcement Directorate plea seeking a stay on the trial court’s decision to grant bail to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a money laundering case linked to an alleged excise scam.
The court’s ruling is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
Following the Enforcement Directorate’s challenge to the trial court’s bail order, a vacation bench headed by Justice Sudhir Kumar Jain had reserved its decision on June 21, temporarily halting the implementation of the lower court’s ruling pending the final judgment.
Arvind Kejriwal, the AAP national convenor, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21. His potential release from Tihar jail was delayed after the high court granted interim relief to the central agency.
On June 20, the trial court had granted bail to Kejriwal, directing his release on a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh and imposing conditions that prohibit him from interfering with the investigation or influencing witnesses.
The Enforcement Directorate has argued that the trial court’s decision was flawed, describing it as “perverse” and based on irrelevant considerations.
The excise policy under scrutiny was discontinued in 2022 following an order by the Delhi lieutenant governor for a CBI investigation into alleged irregularities and corruption related to its formulation and execution, according to assertions by the CBI and ED concerning modifications to the policy and alleged favoritism towards license holders.
