The national capital witnessed heavy rainfall accompanied by powerful winds early Sunday morning, resulting in widespread disruption across the city. Several roads and underpasses were inundated, leading to severe traffic congestion that brought vehicles to a standstill for several kilometers.
Flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport were significantly affected. According to officials, around 200 flights were delayed and 49 flights were diverted due to adverse weather conditions. The Delhi Airport issued an advisory urging passengers to check real-time flight updates through official airline websites before heading to the airport.
Major carriers, including Air India and IndiGo, also released alerts advising travelers to stay updated on their flight statuses as weather-related disruptions continue.
One of the most affected areas was the key underpass connecting central Delhi to the airport, which became submerged overnight, leaving dozens of cars and buses stranded in rising water.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast further heavy downpours accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over the next few hours. Wind speeds are expected to reach 70 to 80 km/h, posing risks of additional disruption and potential damage.
Emergency response teams are on high alert, and authorities have urged residents to avoid waterlogged areas and exercise caution during travel.
